LARA PALMER ARTIST, TOFINO B.C.
Based in Tofino, B.C. for 16 years, I draw inspiration from its tides, light, and ecosystems. Since 2024, I’ve been creating photography-based conceptual art that invites discovery and sparks imagination. My work has been featured at the Tofino Gallery of Contemporary Art, Long Beach Lodge Artists Series, the Henry Nolla Gallery at the Wickaninnish Inn, and the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver. MIRRORS
At low tide, a thin layer of water on Chesterman Beach turns the sand into a giant mirror, reflecting the sky. I capture this symmetry in-camera and rotate the horizon onto a vertical centerline. This simple shift encourages us to pause and see the subject in a new way. Like inkblots, unexpected details emerge, and the symmetry fosters harmony and a sense of universal connection.
CAVE PAINTINGS
During Tofino’s extreme low tides, hidden ocean caves briefly open, revealing a vivid gallery of intertidal life. I photograph the walls up close, capturing the colours, patterns, and textures shaped by intertidal life like algae, sponges, and bivalves. The results are abstract compositions, paintings created by the ocean and its creatures.
TREE PAINTINGS
Old Growth Cedars and Sitka Spruce are majestic, but up close they reveal a world of surprising beauty. Moss, lichen, and fungi paint the trees with vibrant colours and textures, which I photograph to highlight the abstract detail we often overlook. A single tree can reflect an entire ecosystem reminding us not to miss the trees for the forest.
